Considering the huge popularity with mindfulness, it is not surprising that practitioners and researchers working with children and adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) or autism have started to explore the potential of mindfulness-based interventions.
The term 'intellectual disabilities' (ID) was once called 'mental retardation'  It is a diagnositic label used by mental health professions to describe adults and children with low intelligence quota (IQ).   Intellectual disability is characterized by deficits in general mental processes, including problem solving, reasoning,  planning,  judgment, abstract thinking, academic learning, and acquiring new information. Causes can be environmental, genetic, medical, psychiatric or through traumatic brain injury.

Can Mindfulness Help a Child with Autism or ADHD? I add autism to ID because although 75% will be below 70 on the non=verbal  IQ scale, autism will be evident in people  with normal or even superior intelligence.  IQ tests only relate to verbal and logic ability
